Turning the Pages at the Art Institute of Chicago

The Art Institute of Chicago's most unique and important artist sketchbooks, manuscripts and rare printed items are now available online. Viewers may page through or zoom in to look closely at the bound volumes, prints, and handscroll paintings from the Department of Prints and Drawings, the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries, the Department of Asian Art, and the Department of African Art and Indian Art of the Americas. This interactive site is made possible by the innovative Turning the Pages software, which was developed for the British Library.

This Turning the Pages pilot project has been generously supported by the Community Associates of the Art Institute of Chicago. Our current roster boasts over thirty-five items, and we hope to add new volumes over time. Turning the Pages has also appeared on touch-screens in exhibitions from the Department of Prints and Drawings as well as the Department of Medieval to Modern European Painting and Sculpture. We will continue to use the technology in kiosks in upcoming temporary exhibitions and permanent installations.
