Turning the Pages at the Art Institute of Chicago

Several of the Art Institute of Chicago's most unique and important artist sketchbooks, manuscripts and rare printed items are now available online. Viewers may page through or zoom in to look closely at the bound volumes, prints, and handscroll paintings from the Department of Prints and Drawings, the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries, and the Department of Asian Art. This interactive site is made possible by the innovative Turning the Pages software, which was developed by the British Library. (The software requires the free download of Microsoft Silverlight.)

This Turning the Pages pilot project has been generously supported by the Community Associates of the Art Institute of Chicago. We hope to add new volumes over time, and to continue to use the technology in touch-screen kiosks in upcoming exhibitions.
