Art and Culture in the New South Africa
|
|
Explore all that the new South Africa has to offer with curator of African art Kathleen Bickford Berzock. Begin your expedition in Cape Town, where visits include the South African National Gallery, a private tour of Robben Island, the Irma Stern and Rupert Art Museums, and a very special meeting with Helen Zille, the Mayor of Cape Town and leader of the Democratic Alliance political party. Visit the mountainous uKhahlamba-Drakensberg region, considered by experts to be one of the top areas in the world for rock art. In Johannesburg, visit the Johannesburg Art Gallery, Origins Center, Apartheid Museum, and noted local art galleries. Drive 35 miles northwest of Johannesburg to visit the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, containing a dozen dolomitic limestone caves containing the fossilized remains of ancient forms of animals, plants, and most importantly, hominids. The program concludes with three full days at the Mashatu Game Reserve. An optional three-day post-trip to the Thornybush Game Reserve at Kruger Park is available. |
