The Art Institute of Chicago
Access to Institutional Archives
Application for Access
Archives Procedures

All records prior to 1958 are considered historic and available for research purposes, although some restrictions may still apply. Collections may be unavailable for research due to: fragile nature of original records; incomplete organization or description; possible violation of right to privacy of living authors or correspondents. Additional restrictions may be imposed on sensitive documents or series in the museum and school archives (i.e., legal issues and personnel matters) in order to protect the legitimate proprietary rights of the institution. All visitors are required to follow the procedures as outlined in the Application for Access to the Institutional Archives. Some records may only be available in microfilm format. Access to material post-1958 is decided on a case by case basis. Permission from the head of the originating department may be needed.
