The Art Institute of Chicago
Requesting Materials

Readers are not admitted to the book stacks and materials do not circulate outside the Reading Room. All books other than those in the Reading Room must be requested through the Circulation Desk by using call slips. After locating records in the catalog fill out a separate call slip for each item desired. Blank call slips are located in the catalog area and at the Circulation Desk. You must supply:

  1. location; call number, complete as given, with volume and year for serials; author; title; your name; date;
  2. the number of the chair in the Reading Room where you will be sitting.

Books will be paged from the stacks and delivered to the chair location, normally within 15 minutes. Materials should be returned to the Circulation Desk when finished. You will be informed if an item is unavailable. If requesting microforms, CD-ROMs, videos, or archival materials, please consult the Reference Librarian for assistance. Books with OPEN SHELF or INDEXES as a Location are in the Reading Room and may be used without call slips. Current issues of many periodical titles, identified in the catalog by the Location DISPLAY SHELVES, are kept in the Reading Room on open shelves and may be used freely.
