The Ryerson & Burnham Libraries are open to qualified readers and are closed stack and non-circulating. Most materials are housed within the Libraries' three floors of restricted access book stacks and must be paged from the stacks by following the Libraries' paging procedures. All readers must observe the general rules of the Libraries. Access to the stacks and circulation privileges are reserved for Art Institute staff and are granted by the Library Director and the Reader Services unit.

No appointment is necessary for qualified readers to view the book and periodical collections of the Libraries or fully processed archival collections of the Ryerson & Burnham Archives. Access to the Institutional Archives of The Art Institute of Chicago is by appointment only and visitors must follow the Institutional Archives access policies.
