Program Descriptions

Family Programs Explore the great variety of our programs through the links below. Then visit our Family Calendar to find programs for the day of your visit.

  • Children must be accompanied by an adult at all programs.
  • All programs begin in the Ryan Education Center, unless otherwise noted.
  • Admission to the Ryan Education Center is always free. Programs that include a visit to the museum galleries require the purchase of museum admission. Remember, admission is always free for children under 14.
  • Select family programs require advance registration or a fee.
  • We cannot accept groups to the programs outlined below.

The Artist's Studio
(All ages)
This drop-in program features activities inspired by the museum’s collection and special exhibitions.

Drawing in the Galleries
(Ages 6 and up)
Register for a program that explores the basic elements and styles of art through drawing activities inspired by works of art in the museum.

Try your hand at drawing!

Family Art Camp
(Ages 6–12)
Enjoy a week of family fun in the summer.

Family Festivals and Special Events

These special days are filled with drop-in events for the whole family, from art activities to visits by illustrators.

Family Workshop

Gallery Walks

The Little Studio
(Ages 3–5)
Drop in at the studio that's especially for the littlest artists!

Mini Masters
(Ages 3–5)
Register for a program that includes stories, games, a brief gallery visit, and a playful hands-on art activity.

Parent Workshop
Register to find out how to make the most out of your visit to the museum from family programs staff.

Story Time
(Ages 3–5)
Listen to favorite stories from award-winning children’s picture books at this drop-in program.

School of the Art Institute
Find available fee-based courses and camps for students Pre-K through high school.

Teen Studio

If your family is visiting on a day when there are no activities scheduled, there still is plenty to do at the Art Institute!

  • Explore a family exhibition.
  • Pick up free family self-guides and gallery games at the information desk in Gallery 10 or the Ryan Education Center.
  • Stop by the Vitale Family Orientation Room to look at award-winning picture books.
