The Art Institute of Chicago
The Other Side of Light: Shadows from the Photography Collection
December 1, 2007–February 24, 2008
Galleries 2-4

Overview: Shadow plays an interesting role in art. Its fleeting presence is difficult to depict yet the medium of photography is able to represent it perfectly. The photographs on display in The Other Side of Light capture abstract geometric forms as well as exact replicas of the human body, creating a deep curiosity towards a shadow’s inherent elusiveness. This exhibition draws over 60 works entirely from the Art Institute’s permanent collection, including works by Manuel Alvarez-Bravo, Lee Friedlander, André Kertész, Nathan Lerner, and Paul Strand, among others.
