The Art Institute of Chicago
The House Beautiful: Arts and Crafts Architecture
December 1, 2009–February 2, 2010
Ryerson and Burnham Libraries

Overview:

Designers have long been applying William Morris's often-repeated dictum, "Have
nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be
beautiful," to the architecture of the house itself. This exhibition explores how the Arts and Crafts
movement, which drew some of its original inspiration from Gothic architecture,
and its emphasis on simple and natural beauty have influenced movements from
Art Nouveau to the Prairie School. Books and photographs from the
libraries' extensive collections illustrate how Arts and Crafts style evolved
and influenced works by architects like Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Greene and
Greene, and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Please note the exhibition is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
