Gallery 108 Overview: Prior to China’s early 20th-century revolution, the year 1644 marked the final watershed in the country’s imperial history. That spring, the once-powerful court of the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) succumbed to the Manchu-ruled Qing (1644–1911). This exhibition includes paintings, prints, ceramics, lacquers, and jades that span this 17th-century transition. Together, these works reflect different levels of patronage and very diverse aesthetics. Some followed time-honored styles and techniques; others were strikingly innovative.
