Docent-led tours are offered Monday through Friday, October 3, 2011–June 1, 2012. Online applications for first-semester tours (October 3, 2011–January 29, 2012) open on July 15, 2011; online applications for second-semester tours (January 30, 2012–June 1, 2012) open on December 15, 2011.
Docent-Led Tours
Docent-led tours are provided by experienced gallery educators who interact with students to engage them in detailed looking, discussion, and critical thinking about works of art. Most docent tours are one hour in length and are offered at 10:00, 10:30, 11:30, and 12:00, unless otherwise noted in the list of tour topics below.
Docent-led Museum Introduction Tours are designed to introduce the museum thematically. On these tours, docents guide students to look carefully and to make connections between works of art from different people, places, and times and their own experiences today. Since the museum, works of art, and students are always changing, Museum Introduction Tours are never the same twice.
Docent-led Specialized Tours investigate the art of a particular period, culture, or “ism” in depth. Docents engage students in careful looking and critical thinking about the historical, social, philosophical, and/or aesthetic ideas elicited by a group of works of art. Docents also endeavor to lead students to make connections to their own experiences and to use their prior knowledge and classroom learning.
Studio and Special Programs

Teacher-Led Tours
Teacher-led tours are experiences that teachers organize and lead themselves. The museum offers many resources to teachers who select this option. Please visit the Educator Resource Center and use the Planning for a Museum Visit materials suggested below to help you construct your tour. Teacher-led tours times are offered every half hour starting at 11:00. Please note that docent-led tours receive priority in scheduling and in the museum galleries.
