Teachers may choose to lead their students through the galleries without an Art Institute docent. We welcome teacher-led groups, but also require these groups to submit an online tour application due to space considerations. Teacher-led tours begin at 11:00 and run every half-hour until 4:00. Please use the online application form to register for a teacher-led visit.
PLEASE NOTE: Docent-led tours receive preference in scheduling tour times and gallery use. The total number of students in the museum is limited to ensure the best educational experience for everyone. Teacher-led groups must always yield to gallery tours conducted by Art Institute staff and docents.
General Information Group size is limited to 90 students plus chaperones per school per day. We require one chaperone per 10 students for grades 3–12; one chaperone per 6 students for grades 1–2; and one chaperone per 4 students for pre-K–kindergarten. Any additional chaperones must pay the full admission rate of $18 per adult.
Illinois school groups receive free admission to the museum after they apply and receive tour confirmation through our Student Tours office. Groups that do not book a tour in advance will be charged the full admission rate of $12 per student and $18 per adult upon entering the museum.
Non-Illinois school groups who have booked their tour in advance pay $5 per student. There is no charge for the requisite number of chaperones. Payment must be received two weeks in advance of the group's visit. Groups that do not book in advance will be charged the full $12 student rate and $18 adult rate upon entering the museum.
To prepare your students for their visit, teachers can: Review with students the museum rules and expectations in the Planning Your Visit brochure (included with confirmation packet and available online). Look at the Collections pages of the Art Institute's Web site. Use or modify an existing self-guide or lesson plan based on works in the museum's collection. Explore online resources.
