The REC Welcome Back: Spring Programs for School Groups

Now is the time to think about how the museum will be a part of your spring semester. Museum experiences can support and enrich any art, literature, science, math, or social studies curriculum. Docent-led museum tours emphasize close looking, discussion, critical and creative thinking in making connections with works of art, and they highlight the ever-changing permanent collection installations and our special exhibitions. New and notable programs and exhibitions for the spring include: Art and Garden guided tours, studio programs connected to a general introduction guided tour, creative writing and drawing guided tours, and the exhibition Light Years: Conceptual Art and the Photograph, 1964–1977.

Find more information about docent-led tours using the Types of Tours and Programs link to the left. Information about studio programs and special exhibitions can be found within that section of the Student Tours website.

Gallery Closures

This spring, the galleries of Ancient Egypt, Greece, Etruria, and Rome will be closed for reinstallation. Expanded galleries dedicated to the art of Ancient Greece, Etruria, and Rome, and to Byzantine Art will open in October 2012. While these galleries are closed, the following tours will be on hiatus: Ancient Worlds, Art of Ancient Egypt, Greece, Etruria, and Rome, and Classical Mythology and Art. Look for these tours to return in the beautiful new galleries next fall.

Special Notice! Tours May 18–22, 2012

Chicago is hosting the G8 and NATO summit May 19–22, 2012, at McCormick Place. While this conference center is located to the south of the Art Institute, it is expected that this summit will cause disruptions to traffic. We want to be able to offer all tours during this time, but please be aware of this potential disruption and plan your travel to the museum accordingly if you schedule class trips during this time.
