The visit to Chicago by legendary printmaker Elizabeth Catlett to receive the Art Institute's first Legends and Legacy Award, was the occasion for a special teen program, Face to Face: The Art of Elizabeth Catlett. Teens associated with five arts organizations in Chicago—the National Museum of Mexican Art, the South Side Community Arts Center, and the DuSable Museum of African American History, and the Art Institute of Chicago—received instruction in the history and techniques of printmaking during a period of several months. Among the students' activities were a visit to Anchor Graphics, a professional printmaking studio, and a curatorial session at the Art Institute hosted by Mark Pascale of the Prints and Drawings department. As a culminating event, Elizabeth Catlett critiqued prints created by the students during the program. Her critique was the highlight of a family reception held in the Kraft Education Center for the artist and program participants.
