Hitler committed suicide in the Führerbunker on April 30, 1945. His remains and those of his wife, Eva Braun, had been doused in petrol and set aflame in the Chancellery’s bombed-out garden outside the bunker that same day. On May 2, the remains were discovered by a special Red Army unit charged with finding them.
