Cartoon: Kill the Beast in His Lair-Stalin
Fred Ellis (American, 1885–1965). "Kill the Beast in His Lair – Stalin," Daily Worker, May 2, 1944. Wielding his sword, a Nazi colossus meets assailants on all sides, one of which is a gun barrel labeled "2nd Front." Clearly, the Daily Worker took Stalin’s May 1, 1944, Order of the Day to heart.
Stalin’s comparison of Berlin to a lair became one of the most popular concepts used in the political indoctrinations of Red Army soldiers. The speech served as a source for posters, magazine covers, and newspaper cartoons in the Soviet Union as well as abroad, as seen in this cartoon in the Daily Worker.
