One of the most popular French fashion magazines, La Mode Illustrée was also the first to publish as a weekly in order to keep readers current on the latest styles and trends. The journal was issued in four editions; the deluxe edition contained a single color engraving in each issue. The plates and various illustrations provided the 19th century woman examples of appropriate dress for every occasion. La Mode Illustrée also included literary works and articles regarding "admirable feminine and maternal intuition," important to many of the readers who dedicated their lives to the role of housewife.

The Ryerson and Burnham Libraries have only five volumes published between 1867 and 1879, all of which are standard editions.
