Printmaking Technique: Woodcut Illustration 3
The majestically simple woodcut Two Human Beings: The Lonely Ones evokes a feeling of dislocation through a clever technical maneuver. Using a saw, Munch cut the land and the sea into two separate blocks, printing the former in black and the latter in teal blue. The man, printed in black, is connected to the block with the land, while the woman exists as her own, separately inked and jig-sawed block. Dressed in pure white, she looks out on the expanse of water, physically and psychically divorced from the man; he, connected to the land and presumably to his own emotions, is drawn toward her.
