Archival Material: Irving Penn Notebook A13, n.d.

This notebook contains drafts of essays by Irving Penn for a possible book project Seven Visits that was never realized. Some of the essays were later used in Worlds in a Small Room (1974). Penn wrote notes about such topics as his preference for photographing in natural light from north-facing sources, how the studio becomes a neutral space for taking ethnographic portraits, and his experiences photographing in Cuzco in December 1948. Included at the back are sketches of food pictures for travel assignments—including to Portugal and to Rome—as well as general notes for possible book projects.
