2013.1092 Shiraga Kazou Golden Wings
Shiraga Kazuo. Golden Wings Brushing the Clouds Incarnated from Earthly Wide Star (Chikatsusei Maunkinshi), 1960. Through prior purchase from the Mary and Leigh Block Fund, restricted gift of Barbara Bluhm-Kaul and Don Kaul.

Featuring painting, sculpture, installation art, and new-media work, the department’s significant collection of contemporary art encompasses the many major art movements from 1945 to the present, including Pop Art, Word Art, Conceptual Art, Minimalism, and Gutai. Among the highlights are works by such artists as Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Eva Hesse, David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Bruce Nauman, Gerhard Richter, Cindy Sherman, Cy Twombly, and Andy Warhol. The already strong collection was greatly enriched in 2015 by an exceptional gift of 44 masterworks from collectors Stefan Edlis and Gael Neeson, and it continues to grow and expand through acquisitions of works by contemporary artists working today. Recent acquisitions include works by Mark Bradford, Aaron Flint Jamison, Zhang Peili, Elizabeth Price, Josephine Pryde, and Cauleen Smith.
