About this artwork
MacDonald Gill is best remembered today for maps, particularly this one, which was issued by the Underground in 1914 and became so popular that it was mentioned in many newspapers. The Daily Sketch commented that passengers “miss their trains yet go on smiling.” This is not surprising, given the multitude of jokes and puns contained in the image. Among the witty notations is a “fed up” giraffe at the London Zoo being served a bun from a roof, a dragonlike serpent that appears in the Serpentine, and men throwing hams in the sports park Hurlingham. Characters’ thought and speech bubbles provide clues. How many gags can you find?
