About this artwork

Raemaekers became one of the most well-known wartime propaganda artists, and his images were widely circulated not only in the United Kingdom but also in the United States. The British government exhibited his works, like Armenia, in traveling shows to raise money for the country. The sale of prints signed by the artist helped support the Armenian community in England and elsewhere. A growing diaspora of Armenians resulted from their systematic displacement and murder by the Ottoman Empire, a German ally during World War I. This would offer a premonition of further genocides to come in the 20th century.
