Ralph Elmer Clarkson was an influential painting instructor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1903 to 1920. He was an important member of a group of Chicago artists, architects, and writers that included Louis Sullivan and Lorado Taft. Nouvart Dzeron, the model in this painting, was one of his students.
