About this artwork

Westermann, who studied in the early 1950s at the School of the Art Institute, is best known for his idiosyncratic and obsessively crafted sculptures. Lemon had worked with the artist before starting Landfall, but the only project they completed in Chicago is the portfolio entitled Six Lithographs, of which Holiday Inn is a part. The images encompass familiar themes in Westermann’s sculptural and graphic oeuvre, including Death Ship, which refers to his experiences as a gunner aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Enterprise during World War II.
