About this artwork

David Vestal studied painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before turning to photography in the late 1940s. He honed his craft under Sid Grossman at New York’s Photo League, a cooperative dedicated to documentary photography and social activism. Unlike contemporaries who explored the narrative format of the photo-essay, Vestal preferred to highlight singular moments. Here, from the elevated vantage point of his apartment window, he portrayed the repeated rectangles formed by a coating of snow on trucks making their deliveries.
