Corpus and Superscription Plaque

c. 1550

Central Italy, probably Florence

This figure of the dead Christ and the accompanying plaque were once attached to a cross and would have formed the focal point of an altar in a private chapel, similar to the crucifix visible in the Art Institute’s Jacopo da Empoli’s portrait of a woman. This image of Christ is of a type often seen in Florentine sculpture around the middle of the 16th century.
