About this artwork

Steinberg loved rubber stamps as much as he loved collage, and he even designed his own. In this work, the drawing is completely composed of layered stamps of the artist’s own drawn marks, including the hatching, the cross-hatching, the stippling, and even the fence posts and linear contours of the buildings. Several other drawings on view employ a similar method or integrate the stamps with freehand drawing.
