About this artwork
Scott Peterman has photographed bob-houses, or ice-fishing shacks in the lakes region of Maine and New Hampshire, as part of an ongoing exploration of the ever-complicated relationship between people and nature. Ideal specimens of vernacular architecture, bob-houses are made from lightweight, windproof materials ingeniously assembled into various utilitarian forms. “I’m interested in these shacks [because] they illustrate a primal narrative whose elements are simply shelter, food, warmth and an ongoing battle against the caprices of nature,” Peterman has explained. He photographs the shacks with an 8-by-10-inch view camera under snowy or foggy conditions, which filter the light while also limiting the range of color. Nearly monochromatic, his photographs forgo a more richly descriptive documentation of local architecture to emphasize the shacks as minimalist forms in the landscape.
