About this artwork

In this image, a man lies among swathes of dark material resembling a furrowed landscape, much like the man in the first print of the portfolio, Help the Cripple. But here, the man has connected beyond himself and the darkness of his experiences. Like a seedpod in fertile soil, the stump of his leg has sprouted a tree, and a woman plucks fruit from its branches. Still enveloped by darkness, the man is being eased out of his cocoon. While his body will never return to its prewar state, new life and new relationships give this print a hopeful tone.
