In the renwu year [1642], while visiting Mr. Tanweng in Yang- zhou, I saw a fan painting by Mr. Ji’ou. The painting is elegantly executed in lustrous brush and ink; its river and valley are profound and classic. From ancient times, literati who could practice the “Six Canons” were endowed with divine brightness, which I do not have. With this painting, I beg Mr. Ji’ou’s instruction and await to hear it on the day we meet. Lan Ying.
The Six Canons [Liu fa] refers to six principles for evaluating painting written by Xie He (active c. 479–502). This text became an important foundation for subsequent art criticism in China.
