About this artwork

Graduating from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 1940s, Kapsalis later taught painting and drawing at the school for over 50 years. This etching draws on Cubist-inspired spatial construction and depicts a variety of musical instruments on top of a table. Fully engaged with etching at this time, here Kapsalis deeply bit the etching plate, achieving a powerful objectness that transcends the medium.
