About this artwork

During his stay in Rome, Cornelis van Poelenburch joined an artistic fraternity known as the Bentvueghels (birds of a feather). Among other things, these artists enjoyed day trips outside of the city. The ancient retreat of Tivoli was one of their favorite destinations. Here Poelenburch dramatized the rushing water of the waterfall below the central section of the city by alternating the blank paper (reserve) with dense applications of ink wash.
