About this artwork

This sketch depicts a design for the Rio Auditorium that was most likely designed to house 3000 people. Noted as “last project,” it is well known that Niemeyer work through the some of the last months of his life. This sketch is perhaps, the most recent project Niemeyer had been designed when he produced these sketches in February 1999. While records on this project remain elusive, the formal components show a strong resemblance to Niemeyer’s design for the Niterói Museum of Contemporary also in Rio de Janeiro. Both designs frame expansive view of the surroundings and are rooted by a stem-like structure supporting the building.
