Inscriptions

Inscribed and signed recto, on mount, lower center, along bottom edge, below image, in black ink: "Eagle Art Works Foundary, 6700 Southwest Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri (August 1993) / 1/7 Joel Sternfeld"; unmarked verso Christopher Harris was shot to death on the night of June 7, 1991, when he was used as a human shield in a gun battle between rival drug dealers in St. Louis. Christopher was nine years old. Clarence Harmon, the Chief of Police of St. Louis, started a program to buy back guns from the community in order to build a memorial to Harris. Over seven thousand guns were purchased, melted down, and cast into this statue, sculpted by Rudolph Torrinni. From the series, On This Site: Landscape in Memoriam
