About this artwork

Mori Yoshitoshi pioneered a method known as kappazuri by applying stencil-dyeing techniques traditionally used for textiles to contemporary prints. This work was made in the 1960s using kappazuri. The wind and thunder gods are probably meant to be viewed as a pair, as they are often depicted in traditional sculpture and painting. Mori commonly represented scenes from history and legend, with a focus on imagery from Buddhism.
