About this artwork

This poster takes aim at the profascist press in Mexico, a favorite target of Taller de Gráfica Popular criticism during and after the Spanish Civil War (1936–39). The Taller feared that the struggle between General Francisco Franco’s fascist forces and the elected Spanish Republican government foreshadowed Mexico’s future, and the group sought to discredit the pro-Franco press in ruthless caricatures, in this case suggesting not only its support for fascism but that it was controlled by foreign interests. A portly gachupín, a derogatory term for Spanish-born immigrants to Latin America, blows a horn emblazoned with the names of pro-Franco newspapers. The horn’s bell ends in the braying head of the newspaper editor Miguel Ordorica, who is branded a fascist and whose mouth emits only falsehoods.
