About this artwork

Ferdinand Bol entered Rembrandt’s studio when he was about 20 years old, and his work remained closely allied with his master until Bol married into a wealthy family in 1653. He made about 16 etchings that date from 1642 to 1651, which, like this enigmatic print, reflect the influence of Rembrandt’s early work.
