500 Ways of Looking at Modern
This illustrated lecture will assess the achievements and legacy of the Roman emperor Hadrian, who presided over the Roman Empire during the height of the Pax Romana, the Roman Peace. Hadrian was an extraordinary administrator, architect, and general, reorganizing Roman government from Britain to Syria, building impressive and lasting monuments, and helping further to incorporate conquered peoples into Roman society. Melissa Barden Dowling of Southern Methodist University will examine Hadrian’s Pantheon in Rome, his library in Athens, his villa at Tivoli in Italy, the city he founded in Egypt, as well as his other lasting contributions to Western culture. Sponsored by the Boshell Foundation Lecture Fund.
