Express Talk
Born in New Orleans, Archibald J. Motley, Jr. spent most of his life in Chicago, and his paintings celebrate the urban experience. Above all, Motley's subject matter was the dynamic social and cultural life of Bronzeville, a South Side community that became home to 90 percent of Chicago's African American population by the 1930s. Nightlife, painted in 1943, depicts a crowded and exuberant Bronzeville nightspot. Motley's vibrant colors, complex cast of characters, and sophisticated composition express the syncopated excitment of jazz and the culture that fostered it. Join us on January 11 at 2:00 and February 27 at noon for a closer look at this American masterpiece.
