In celebration of the anniversary of Swami Vivekananda's landmark address to the first World's Parliament of Religions, Indian artist Jitish Kallat created a site-specific installation on the Art Institute's Woman's Board Grand Staircase. In Public Notice 3, Kallat presented Vivekananda's September 11, 1893 speech as text on LED displays positioned on each of the 118 risers of the sweeping Grand Staircase. A meditation on Vivekananda's call for an end to fanaticism and the events of the same date 108 years later—September 11, 2001—Vivekananda's words were illuminated in colors of the Homeland Security alert system.
