BIOGRAPHY
D. Denenge Akpem is a space sculptor born in rural Nigeria.
Her installations and performances are inspired by science fiction,
often featuring half-alien/half-human self-portraits that re-define
concepts of race, gender and humanity. She teaches sculpture/
performance workshops at museums, cultural centers and schools and is
currently Program Coordinator for the Visiting Artists Program at the
School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Exhibition and performance
venues have included: Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago,
12x12 New Artists/New Work; "Takeover" at the Hyde Park Art Center; Polvo;
Gallery 2 and Projet Space; The Museum of Science and Industry;
The Art Institute of Chicago (Museum);and Dillard University Gallery.
She holds a BA from Smith College and MFA from the School of the
Art Institute of Chicago.
